AI and environment: 12 territories selected to design frugal AI for ecological transition
Edited by :
La Banque des Territoires, France 2030
Summary
12 territories have been selected to implement projects aligned with frugal AI principles. These regions responded to the call for frugal AI demonstrator projects for ecological transition, launched by La Banque des Territoires under the France 2030 initiative.
The goal is to track the progress of ongoing projects, analyze early results, and validate hypotheses regarding their positive externalities.
The projects in these 12 territories will follow the recommendations of the Afnor Spec Frugal AI to deploy their AI-powered services.
The editorial perspective
The methodology proposed by La Banque des Territoires is well thought out. By selecting a sample of 12 stakeholders, they aim to assess the extent to which AI can genuinely serve ecological transition.
If successful, the goal is to replicate the most effective projects in other regions. This is a key initiative to watch closely. Engaging with local territories, questioning stakeholders, and understanding their decision-making processes will be essential:
- How do the selected AI projects align with the frugal AI criteria set by Afnor Spec?
- How will service development methods meet frugality goals and generate positive externalities?
In brief, the editorial perspective
The most
- Pioneering projects to assess whether the principle of frugality (for ecological transition) can be applied
- Potentially inspiring examples for other communities
- An approach based on the belief that algorithmic footprint must be reduced
The least
- At this stage, it is difficult to determine whether AI alternatives were considered before implementing the selected projects
- At this stage, it is difficult to know whether results will be analyzed in terms of all impacts, including indirect effects, and compared to an alternative solution without AI (or even without digital technology)
